No nightly feeds but still waking?

5-month-old Lucas was waking every hour overnight. His parents had done a great job of cutting back and dropping all his nightly feeds but he was still waking. They had tried lots of different techniques such as rocking and patting him to sleep. They would also co-sleep until he was in a deep sleep, then they would put him back into his cot but this didn’t seem to work either. They just wanted Lucas to be happy to sleep in his cot and to help him sleep through the night.

No nightly feeds

Lucas’s parents didn’t know what else they could do and they felt they had tried everything. Even though there were no overnight feeds, why was Lucas still waking? Generally an easy going baby but come the afternoon he would become fussy and grumpy through lack of sleep. They knew that this needed to change.

Going back to work

As Lucas’s mum was transitioning back to work. Lucas was in day-care a couple of days a week, this was helping him to adjust. Mum knew that she wouldn’t be able to cope and survive at work with the minimal sleep she was currently on.

Solutions

A routine was really important to Lucas’s family in order to improve his sleep as mum was going back to work. We looked at adjusting his naps and introduced a settling technique that would help him sleep for longer during the day. We chatted with his day-care providers and they were happy to use the same technique, as we knew consistency was key.

 Some other suggestions

  • Establishing a daily schedule at least a week or two before you go back to work.

  • A favourite comforter or a toy they can take to day-care with them to help them settle.

  • Any white noise or songs that they are used to being played when they go to sleep.

For more information for how to transition back to work, you can read our blog here.

Overnight we worked on dropping the co-sleeping and used the same settling technique as we were using during the day. Lucas began sleeping in longer blocks and was easier to settle back to sleep.  Lucas went from a baby struggling to settle to sleeping through and self-settling. With all this new sleep, his eczema that he was suffering from really cleared up and he was a much happier and healthier baby.

His parents were incredible with embracing the changes and were patient and supportive. Which really helped Lucas achieve all his amazing sleep goals. Now at 15 months, he is glowing from all his sleep he gets each day.

We were having massive issues with getting our 5-month-old son to sleep during the night and even during the day. Even after the first initial phone call with Aprilla we felt like a weight had been lifted off our shoulders.

She was absolutely amazing, so informative, hands on, supportive and so positive and assisted us in absolutely transforming our sons sleep routine. From waking up almost hourly every night and barely sleeping during the day, within 2 weeks with Aprilla’s help and routines, we had him sleeping for 9-10 hour blocks during the night and having regular daytime naps! We can’t recommend Aprilla highly enough, honestly, it was the best decision we ever made to call her!!! Thank you Aprilla so much!
